Pitch Black No. 256 by Farrow & Ball is as pure a black as you can get—strong, uncomplicated, and consistent in all lights. Named after the dark, sticky residue of coal tar used in roofing, it has unsurpassable depth with an almost velvet quality that feels rich rather than flat.
Like All White at the opposite end of the palette, Pitch Black is easy to understand and indispensable. Use it for ironwork and exterior details, dramatic woodwork and trim, or even walls if you’re feeling daring and want a bold, gallery-like backdrop.
